Strength training exercises play an important role in our overall fitness as well as supporting us as we age. Today I want to touch on ten of my favorite strength training exercises.
Strength Training Exercises: 10 Important Exercises to Build Strength
Never underestimate the power of a push-up! There’s a reason why military boot camps have recruits regularly do push-ups – they’re great for building strength without the need for any additional equipment!
Squats use your body weight to build strength in your lower half and they’re a great tool for doing just that! Just be sure that you have a good form so you don’t hurt yourself!
3. Tricep Dips
It’s easy to forget your upper body when you think about strength training without added equipment, but tricep dips are an easy way to incorporate some upper-body work into your routine.
4. Calf Raises
Calf raises – you either love them or you hate them, but however you feel about them, they’re a great way to build strength and to stretch out those calf muscles! This is also a great exercise to get some relief if you have restless legs!
Once you see this strength-building exercise performed, you’ll understand why it’s called the “Superman”! It takes some doing, but the more you work at it, the stronger you will get!
6. Arm Circles
You may not think that this exercise is building any muscle, but you’ll start to notice the “burn” shortly after you start this exercise. It’s not quite as easy as you might think! This is a great exercise for strengthening your shoulders without needing to use any additional equipment to build up that strength.
7. Step Ups
This exercise might remind you of 1980’s Jazzercise as you step up and step down, but they’re a good way to build stamina as well as to work those leg muscles!
8. Wall Squats
If you’re feeling like doing something a little more challenging than the average squats, stand with your back against the wall and lower down into a squatting position, hold, then straighten up to do it all over again! You’ll feel the burn with this one because it is quite challenging, so if you’re not in the best of shape, you might want to skip this exercise for now!
9. Limb Raises
Remember the Superman? This is similar but this time you are lifting your left arm and right leg and holding that pose before lowering them and repeating the exercise on the other side. You’ll feel the “burn” quite quickly with this exercise!
You’ve probably done enough crunches during your life to last you a lifetime, but try adding a few more to your routine. Properly done, crunches will help to tighten up your core and give you the chance to practice rhythmic breathing.
